Bombing is not a solution for the Kosovan crisis!

07. Dez 1999

Press Statement of Pax Christi Flanders, 25 March 1999

In dismay, Pax Christi declares that NATO, under strong pressure from the WEU, has placed itself into a dramatic impasse. The political strategy which has created a black and white view of the conflict in Kosovo has led to a dilemma which does not recognise losers.
Pax Christi regrets that the dilemma has resulted in the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia. Pax Christi wonders if the military means will attain their aim: cease-fire, the signing of a political accord and the emplacement of a peace-keeping force. A lasting solution to the Kosovan crisis quickly, seems to be a hypothetical one.
At the same time Pax Christi condemns the recent military campaign of the Yugoslavian authorities which tragically employs violence to resolve the intrinsically political conflict in Kosovo.
Pax Christi believes that NATO has not given enough thought to the long and short term effects for all of the region and the whole of Europe, including Russia. The Contact Group on Kosovo of the UN Security Council has not kept the initiative. However, legally the action of NATO cannot be justified. Pax Christi cannot accept this state of affairs.
Through a project encouraging dialogue between young Serbs and young Albanians, Pax Christi has been working in the region for some years. Even during this period of extreme violence Pax Christi will continue to encourage and to sustain work for peace, dialogue and mediation between the parties to the conflict.
